CHAPTER 38
The dining table was set with tall white candles, the best crystal, cutlery and porcelain. A plain glass cube vase containing cream roses sat in the middle of it all.
âThis is for you, my love.â Frey grinned at her surprised gasp.
They had been relaxing with a spritzer in the lounge, after showering and changing into their usual down-time clothes of jeans and t-shirt, until Morgan knocked lightly on the door and said dinner was served.
âI thought it would be nice to have an evening by ourselves to enjoy our engagement dinner.â Frey held out her chair and pushed it in when she was ready. He pulled out a seat opposite, and filled her glass with wine, before pouring his own and sitting down.
Sophie was overjoyed. Her man was playing the romantic and it suited him. He looked almost serene as he placed a pretty box next to her glass. She opened it, her eyes widening at the contents. There were the silver teaspoons and sugar tongs from the antique shop.
She leaned over the table and kissed him.
âI have something for you, but it isnât gift wrapped yet, Iâm afraid. Would you like to see it?â
He held his breath, unsure of what she was going to do. Knowing Sophie, it could be another ploy to get him to bed her. He nodded anyway.
She disappeared for a couple of minutes and re-appeared with a plain light oak frame, picture towards her body. As she drew closer to his chair, she turned the frame to face him, holding her breath. Would he like it?
He smiled appreciatively. It was a print on canvass of Vincent Van Goghâs âSheaves of Wheat in a Field.â
âAhh, Sophie, it reminds me of how my fields looked at harvest time.â His eyes darted over the picture, taking in the colours and textures, remembering the gaps in the stooks where heâd hidden as a child. âYou couldnât have picked anything better.â He stopped speaking, a lump forming in his throat.
She wrapped her arms around his shoulders, resting her cheek against the top of his head.
He leaned into her and stroked her forearm with his fingers, closing his eyes, absorbing the warmth of her body, the scent of her skin.
They remained like that for a while, sharing a special moment which said everything without words. Frey moved her arms gently and got up, holding the print in one hand and her hand in the other. They walked over to the breakfast counter where he laid the picture down carefully.
âWe can hang it in the cabin at some point â I think it would look good there.â He felt her head nod, but she didnât say anything.
Morgan was standing next to the table, a plate in each hand, just looking at them. Frey raised an eyebrow and the big vampire put the plates down and disappeared.
The clear soup was delicious although hot and spicy. Sophie drank water occasionally and nibbled bread between each spoonful.
âWhat was that?â She indicated her empty dish with a piece of bread roll held between her fingers.
